I hope everyone had a lovely week so far along with the weekend. I certainly did. We celebrated my birthday on Friday with pizza, cake and family. You just can’t beat that! Thank you to everyone who ordered one or both of our books. I cannot wait to hear your opinions!
I spent a good portion of my weekend hashing out ideas for my next story. A few months back, I had signed on to do another anthology that I am excited about. This one involved magical academies, so I think that will be a lot of fun! My character is a Selkie. For those of you who never heard of them before: they are a creature depicted in both Norse and Celtic folklore. They are shape-shifters that shed their skin to transform from a seal to a human. They’re docile in temperament and often carry a lot of sadness and longing with them. Sadly, many are abused by humans, often forced into marriage by a human who has stolen her skin so that she cannot return to the sea.
My character, however, is not the typical female selkie. Her grandmother, who was the selkie queen, had been taken by humans and forced into marriage for some time. The man she was forced to marry had magical abilities that allowed him to control the elements, which helped him control her and prevented her from being saved by the selkies that served in her kingdom. During this time, she conceived twins. One born with shape-shifting powers, and one without. When the queen finally finds her skin, she tries to take both daughters to the sea with her to keep them safe, but only the one that can shape-shift can go, as it quickly becomes clear that one cannot breathe and must return to land. Their mother, the queen, and both sisters are heartbroken and distraught. The sister forced to remain on the land, tries to visit them frequently, but is soon found out by her father and is punished by forcing her into marriage with a colleague, who is dean of the local academy in their area.
Fast forward to many years later, the selkie who could return has found love, and gives birth to an extraordinary baby girl. She is perfect in every way, but they soon learn that she has certain inherited magical abilities that she had clearly gained from her evil grandfather. As she grows, her abilities do as well, and the stronger they become, the clearer it becomes that she needs to learn to control them. With great concern and a heavy heart, she is sent to the magical academy by her parents, and very nervous grandmother so that she can learn to control her magic.
Anyway, I don’t want to reveal too much more! I’m just hoping all of you will enjoy the story as much as I am enjoying writing it!
