Mystics in Hell
A Heroes in Hell Anthology
Compiled by Janet Morris
Genre: Dark Fantasy Anthology

From The Abode of Woe by A.L. Butcher

Paradise’s dim light grew ever dimmer as the hell-lights began to glare with the blue glow of sulfur. It was an unforgiving light for the unforgiven. Word had got around, and crowds had begun to gather for the evening’s entertainment. Calchas had started a book on the outcome of the battle, and the diablos were rolling in.

“Two to One for the Pig Man!” yelled a grifter clad in the sharpest suit of the evening.

“Seven to Four for the Prince!” bellowed another voice, shrill in the crowd.

Kevin the fiend grinned. He was having the time of his unlife; he’d read the small-print.

“Are they ready?” Calchas asked, eying the large and sinister cloth-covered mounds on opposing sides of the temple.

“Yep. Ready for mayhem, master.” A smiling fiend is not something to stir the heart with confidence or joy and Calchas sobered. He wondered if he should feel guilty, but he had enough of that to last a thousand lifetimes and these New Dead had brought it on themselves. At least that is what he told himself and Cassandra.

“Ego fighting ego will bring no good for either. A temple built in haste to honor mere vanity and lies will surely fall to dust.” Cassandra stared at the mounds, hoping these fire-spiting death machines would not bring them all to the Undertaker’s door. Were they too close? She closed her eyes and let her mind wander.

“Will we be punished for this venture?” He’d asked, thinking too late they may have erred and voicing both their fears. He hoped nothing would backfire; plans in hell oft went awry. And he knew that sooner or later he’d pay the price for this deceit.

“This is Hades. Punishment is inherent. But I think not . . . at least not on this day. ‘Rue thy former life, and revel in thy afterlife, for thou art damned.’ Is that not the advice you once gave me? We are the damned. We must survive as we may. But those infernal and wicked weapons of the new-dead — Surely the walls of Ilium would have fallen on the first day.” She paused, “Would we have fought with such demon-weapons of war?”

Calchas gazed over to the two looming cloth-bound shapes. “Probably. Priam and Agamemnon would have found some means to destroy one another, no doubt. Man’s capacity for war outweighs his capacity for reason — and this place is full of the testimonials to that.”

“They will fall in dust as vain men are wont to do.” Cassandra told him.

“They won’t go through with it. It would be suicide. That building will fall down in the next hell-storm,” Calchas replied, doubtful.

They’d watched the crowd assemble from a reasonable distance. “Pack up. In case. And I will try to steer the mayhem from our door to be on the safe side, should the range of those war-weapons be enough to hit us. Make sure you are careful where you stand.

“Look there’s old Assisi. Out for the entertainment, along with everyone else by the looks. Let’s see — drinks are half-price.” Calchas would not let this opportunity pass.

Cassandra nodded, “Where did you get the fire-spitters?”

“Che Guevara owes me a favor. It might be useful to keep one—just in case. How hard can they be to use? Look, come there are our two brave heroes.” Calchas separated himself from Cassandra, still in the guise of the department man, and wandered over to the two Prophets.

“So, gentlemen, are we ready to settle this? Remember the winner gets control of that site, should it still be standing. The loser, or losers . . .will have more immediate issues to deal with.” Calchas motioned to the nearer of the covered shapes. “Who would like Big Bertha?”

The Reverend Henry Prince stared doubtfully at the shape. “That’s not a sword, or a firearm.”

“Give that make a Heck-Cookie!” Kevin chortled. He’d been milling and warming up the onlookers. With a flourish he tugged the cloth away — to reveal a howitzer, pointing towards the Temple of Woe. It was an evil-looking device, as were many man-made machines of death. “Humans, they do like to kill one another in all sorts of inventive ways! Welcome Big Bertha. She’s a friendly girl!”

“And the other?” Smyth-Pigott asked, his voice tremulous.

They walked across to a lower-slung shape. “Gentlemen, meet Roaring Meg, the deadly maiden of the English Roundheads,” Kevin chuckled.

“Not your era, I suppose, but they do the job. They are primed for combat. Meg has helpers: she fires but one ball at a time, yet she’s a fiery lass and one of the more knowledgeable operatives of hell has evened the odds.” Calchas held his palm out, containing dice. “Whoever rolls snake-eyes gets first choice, but Meg is a little slower, and older, and thus she fires first.”

“What happens if we refuse this ridiculous plan?” Henry Prince could not take his eyes from the cannon.

“Refuse? I wasn’t aware that was an option.” Calchas feigned surprise.

Kevin murmured something in Calchas’ ear, “My associate says it is an option but if a refusal is forthcoming then all rights are revoked to build now and for infernity, Sentence will be the six-hundred and sixty-five years of cleaning Perish sewers, and you must publicly affirm your rival as the true Chosen One, the true heir and the ultimate seer. And as both are equally guilty you will have to work together, and your women too, forever. If both refuse, then it must be done at exactly the same time. Whomever speaks first is deemed the greater coward.”

Mystic Madness!
Join the doomed on their vision quests in eleven stories by the damnedest writers in Perdition: Janet Morris; A.L. Butcher; Joe Bonadonna; Andrew P. Weston; Gustavo Bondoni; Seth Lindberg; Tom Barczak; Michael H. Hanson; Louis Antonelli; Christopher Crosby Morris.

Mystics in Hell is the latest volume in the notorious Heroes in Hell series of anthologies and novels created by Janet Morris.

A Frame of Mind by Janet Morris & Chris Morris
Kit Marlowe treks back from exile, where he has encountered three witches. Carrying a skull which he found on a blasted heath, he arrives at the Globe, where Satan and the angel of death accost him. At their displeasure, he’s banished once more, this time to return instantly via the powers of the Fates. Satan meets him at a cast party and decrees that Kit not only will spy for him, but play Banquo, beheaded in each subsequent performance of Macbeth.

The Come Right Inn by Andrew P. Weston
Where we meet up with one of Satan’s most secretive agents. A charming woman with a finger—and most other body parts—in every pie. She’s bewitching, beguiling, and bedeviled to be sure, but won’t think twice about skinning you alive if you cross her.

Abode of Woe by A.L. Butcher
When the self-proclaimed anti-messiah builds a temple on their doorstep and ruins business, Calchas and Cassandra look to some devious means to bring down the walls. Dueling mystics and misinformation bring mayhem to the underworld.

Fool’s Gold by S.E. Lindberg
A tale of the Egyptian god of mysticism, Thoth, who seeks conspirators to retrieve the Philosopher’s Stone; with it, Thoth could usurp Satan’s control of the realm of Duat. Taking up the charge is Howard Carter, infamous antiquarian and tomb raider, and the disgraced evolutionist Ernst Haeckel. They discover that King Midas’s alchemical ability to transmute flesh into gold relies on the stolen stone, and Midas is producing Hell’s new gastro-currency: buttcoin. They infiltrate the Mortuary Mint and sabotage the currency’s production. Instead of returning the stone to Thoth, the duo uses it to build up their own fortune. The auditors of Hell, namely the First and Second of the Sibitti, police the matter.

The True Believer by  Lou Antonelli
Few national leaders of the 20th century had as much of a negative and controversial impact on history as Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd, prime minister of South Africa from 1958 to 1966, when he was assassinated. Commonly referred to in South Africa as “Dr.” Verwoerd, he had a PhD in psychology, and went down in history as The Man Who Invented Apartheid. Now in Hell, Dr. Verwoerd refuses to acknowledge his infernal fate and gets a special visit to set him straight.

By Any Means Necessary by Gustavo Bondoni
Umberto Eco knows he’s in Hell; the suffering and multiple deaths that never kill him permanently are more than enough of a clue for a man of his learning.  But when he gets forcibly recruited by Nazi Commando Otto Skorzeny to prove the theories of one of history’s greatest charlatans, he thinks things can’t get any worse.  He’s wrong.  Hell can always get worse.

Excalibur by Tom Barczak
When dealing with the harsh reality of the Afterlife: Hell can be hard. But Rasputin has something even harder, and Lafayette Ronald Hubbard desperately needs it if he is going to pull off the greatest magic trick Hell has ever known.

On The Run by Michael H. Hanson
Tells of Sufi mystic Rumi, Zen Buddhist Dōgen, and Charlatan Spiritualist Mina Crandon using their new-found magics on the grandest of all quests, to find powerful talismans that will allow them to escape Hell itself.

The Sorcerous Apprentice by  Andrew P. Weston
Daemon Grim learns new tricks from an old dog. And just as well. There’s a fallen saint to bring to heel, and she’s not known for playing ball . . . crystal or otherwise.

The Colossus of Hell by Joe Bonadonna
Doctor Victor Frankenstein and computer scientist Alan Turing want to build a cyborg. Quasimodo wants to win the hand of the French fortune teller, Marie Anne Lenormand. Rasputin and Cagliostro want to open an exclusive, private club. And a mysterious damned soul, known only as the Orange Ogre, wants revenge against anyone in Hell who ever cheated or betrayed him, laughed at and humiliated him, or even ignored him—especially His Satanic Majesty himself.

Strange Arts by Janet Morris and Chris Morris
In a Tower cell, Marlowe’s head struggles to regain consciousness and rejoin his body. Here he finds his Elizabethan spymaster, Walsingham, waiting with J the Merciful and three mysterious Sisters. After painfully stitching together his body and soul, the five entreat him to join their most secret conspiracy.

by: Keith Wood
Genre: Dark Historical Halloween Murder Fiction

Add to your TBR List!

BLURB:

'The Day of the Spider' is a sort of sequel to the debut novel, 'One Day in May' by the author, but can be equally read as a standalone work as it is very different, though still set in the 18th century.

The novel is primarily set in the heart of the Hambleton Hills of North Yorkshire, though it starts off in Mansfield in Nottinghamshire where the heroine (or should that be anti-heroine), Nellie Chapman, a sexually abused young woman from a traditional mining family feels she has to move a long way from her past life. She has no plans but to get away and live a life on her own terms, an uncommon practice for a woman in the 18th century.

Despite Nellie's unlawful past, fate ensures that she seems to bear a charmed life. You may hate her or love her; it's for you to judge and you'll find plenty to entertain as you sit in judgement.

Jack MacGregor

As we all know by now, Brigadoon is a mythical, enchanted, Scottish village that appears for only one day every century.

That day was when Jack MacGregor's parents took the leap, together with their new born son, and opted to relocate to an 'earthlier' environment, having the spectral pre knowledge that Jack would, one day, become an author of note (ish).

Were he to keep residence in the village there would not be a wide enough audience to read or even purchase his ramblings. That and the fact that there was no such thing as 'television' or 'films' or even bookshops in Brigadoon meant his literary career would have been somewhat stunted were he to stay.

Jack was therefore raised in a town in Lancashire, where he developed a strong Bolton accent and a fascination, via Pendle Hill, for witches... oh, and The Munsters and The Addams Family.

The move also allowed his parents to spend their leisure time holidaying in such glamorous locales as Blackpool, Fleetwood and Morecambe - places that they had heard word of only in ancient folklore, back in the old village. Places they could but dream of. If only they had known the reality.

Anyway, Jack's education was undertaken in an old Salesian boys' school, or college as it was then known, where he honed the gentlemanly skills of football, fencing, athletics, music, art and of course English language and literature. He took no heed when it came to mathematics, physics or Latin studies - he already knew they would be of little use to him in his future life. And he was correct!

(Excuse me for a moment please. After returning from her daily romp on the back field, our minx of a Springer Spaniel, Jinny (named after a character in Jack's books) has just performed the most pungent poo known to, well, anybody or anything, right outside the office door, and guess who's down for cleaning it up...)

Where was I? Apart from in the shit... so, in a nutshell (or nutcase) Jack took on many unsuitable roles after leaving college:

Lithographic printing, landscaping, butchering (no murder, mind), music repping, DJ (he invented The Headbangers Ball, which fizzled out when MTV nicked the name for their very own with no recompense to JM) working in a record shop or three, owning a record shop, working as a Placement Officer for the DHSS, then running two of the UK's finest small music venues.

From nowhere (but allegedly, China) came a mystery 'pandemic' whilst Jack was working part time as a courier - he was now a 'Key Worker'! Ha Ha and thrice Ha!

The peace and quiet that accompanied this outrageous farce finally gave Jack the time and head space he needed to put pen to paper (or one finger to keyboard) and commence work on the weird and weirder tales that had been rattling around for many a year.

He had planned much of this in the Lake District, in the Valley of the Golden Eagles, surrounded by a multitude of darling red squirrels and the odd faery, but when it came to finally 'getting it all down' Jack completely ignored everything he'd planned and free-formed a new.

The only inspiration was a tiny black cat that Jack's partner had discovered sitting smack in the middle of the crossroads, outside their venue, one terribly stormy evening.

She brought him in and introduced him to their existing cat, Spike, who proceeded to boss him mercilessly until he became his slave. Still is!

That tiny black mouser was wittily christened 'Jet' and the tale of 'Jet Splinters' unfolded around him, without plan or forethought.

Two books were picked up and published almost immediately by Green Cat Books in the shire of Derby and the third has been a long time coming due to real life getting in the way.

Book 3 has definitely been birthed and should be on its way by 2026, but that's been promised for simply ages... getting Book 1: 'A Bustle In the Hedgerow' and Book 2: 'The Shadow Cutters', under the banner of 'Jiggery Pokery', to TV or Film is a priority, hopefully before Jack MacGregor's demise, because he'd like to watch them too ... and that, my patient friends, brings you all up to date.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoys hunting, camping, and fishing with his wife and young son. Couching Serendipity

We begin in a posh bar somewhere in lower Manhattan. Dark wood and butter soft leather. Polished bronze and dusky amber lights. Soft industrial pop plays, sultry and slightly discordant, highlighting the edge of conversations and the looks thrown between complete strangers as they prowl amongst Friday night’s fresher, less jaded clientele.

A meat market, yes. The bar, a well-known hunting ground for both hopeful and horny, lorn and libidinous, the room simmers with the potential for lust and love.

But in one corner, a man and a woman sit, removed from the game. Together, yet apart and uncannily separate from the rest, their interest lies upon a couple secreted away in a booth, and the wager they’ve made concerning them…

“Quite the match, aren’t they?” Mira’s brow rose, her lips grazing the edge of her martini glass. She averted her eyes from the couple’s canoodling and took a small sip of her drink, gin and vermouth the barest whisper upon her tongue.

“Mmm.” On the stool beside her, Kade was noncommittal. He raised a tattooed hand. His heavy platinum watch slipped to the sleeve of his bespoke Armani suit as he loosened his tie, its cornflower silk the exact shade of his eyes. He glanced at her askance from beneath a fall of raven wing hair. “This doesn’t prove anything, you know.”

Mira’s laughter rang out. People turned, but she was used to that and rather enjoyed it. She tsked, patting Kade’s arm with crocodile conciliation, her tapered, crimson nails complimenting his pinstripes. “Aww. Not quite the corner on the market you’d been led to believe?” Her eyes sparked as brightly as the diamond on the observed woman’s left hand…which was currently thrust as deep in her beau’s thinning hair as his tongue was down her throat.

“What were the limits to your power again…?” Kade drummed his fingers on the bar top, pensive. “Ah, yes, no more than three wishes, no bringing people back from the dead, and,” he paused, so smug she could just slap him, “no wishes for love. That, my dear, falls solely into a cupid’s purview.”

“And I’ll maintain that one doesn’t have to be the spawn of Aphrodite to nudge two people together that obviously should be. You don’t need to wish for love to find it.” Mira batted her lashes and teased an olive from her drink pick with her teeth.

Kade’s hand flew to his breast. “Spawn? Mira, you wound me.” He chuckled and threw back the last of his bourbon. “Though you are right about one thing, those wishing for love seldom find it. It’s the ones not looking for it that get hit most often.” He cocked his brow and she rolled her eyes at the jab, having given up on experiencing that fickle emotion long ago.

“But regardless,” he continued, “ring or no, that is lust…on his part anyway, and I’d venture it’s avarice on hers.” He eyed the couple still going at it and set his glass down. “You, little jinn, exist to grant desires, whereas I—” he grinned, and a mousy woman seated behind Mira gasped. Kade’s eyes flicked to her, then back to Mira, his stupid smile impossibly wider. “Am made for love.” He collected his phone from the bar and shot off a quick text.

Mira rolled her eyes and swatted his chest. Gah, cupids were intolerable—especially this cupid. “So you’re telling me that’s not true love?”

“Hardly,” he said, re-pocketing the silly device and collecting his overcoat. “But please, do keep trying.”

Mira made a concerted effort not to pout until he’d cleared the large windows at the front of the restaurant and was halfway down the block. Only then did she allow herself to slump, her gaze going back to the couple in the booth. How could Kade not see how perfect those two were for each other?
The woman, Mira’s former client, had wished for a steady job, and with a slight twist of serendipity, there was the man. He was in need of a nanny for his Pomeranian.

Her second wish had been for a rent-controlled apartment and fortuitously, he preferred live-in help.
And her last wish had been to gain a skill to ensure her continued employment; he was more than eager to pay for her canine reiki classes.

The two of them were absolute kismet. A real life beauty and the—well, he wasn’t quite rugged enough to be a beast, but still—And age gaps had been a thing literally forever. His winter to her spring was both classic and on trend. Mira took another sip of her martini as her former client minced by on six-inch stilettos. How she walked the dog in those…

Mira waved the thought away. Not her concern, aside from the fact that Kade was wrong, and her most fervent wish was to prove it to him if it were the last—

“Um, excuse me?”

Mira turned to the brunette behind her and cocked a brow. “Yes?”

The mousy little thing bowed her shoulders as if chagrinned. As she should be for leaving the house dressed like that. How did she even get in here?

“I—was that your boyfriend?”

“Was that my…?” Was she mad?

The brunette’s cheeks flared crimson. “Sorry, it’s none of my business, I just—the way he grinned at me, I—never mind.”

Now, wait a moment. Mira caught the woman’s arm as she went to turn, and she started at Mira’s smile. It did have the tendency to dazzle, all part of the onboarding process. “No, he’s not my boyfriend. In fact, he’s completely unattached at the moment. Why do you ask?”

The brunette glanced down at Mira’s fingers wrapped around her arm and swallowed heavily. “No, I—” She shook her head, then buzzed her lips with a little laugh. “It’s stupid, but when he smiled, I—Butterflies.” She shrugged.

“Butterflies?” The woman nodded, and Mira’s grin grew larger. More like cupid’s wings. She let go of the brunette’s arm and held her hand out to shake. “I’m Mira Marid. And you are?”

“Becca Hornsby.” She fumbled with a large canvas tote at her elbow, her cuticles rimmed with the rainbow as she extended her hand.

Mira’s brow rose. “You’re an artist.” A wisp of energy passed from her to Becca, shackling the woman’s wrist to her own. Hello, new client.

“I—Oh!” Becca’s gray-green eyes widened, as if she’d felt it. She hooked a flyaway tendril of hair behind her ear and dipped her head. “N-no, not like you’re probably thinking. I paint interiors. Walls,” she said, as if that needed clarifying.

“Murals?”
