A sniper. A surf contest. A father with everything to lose.

Pismo Beach Sniper
A Thad Hanlon/ Bri de la Guerra Mystery Book 3
by: Topper Jones
Genre: Private Investigator Mystery

I was sitting under a beach canopy in the spectator section of the California Central Coast Surf Trials, watching the first heat of the semifinals, when I heard the sonic crack of a large firearm. Something long-range like the scoped high-precision rifle my business partner, Bri, uses to qualify at the Five Cities Shoot’n Center.

“What was that?” my son’s surf coach asked. Gev Burian was sitting on my left. “Sounded like it came from behind us.”

Bri de la Guerra, on my right, stood to check things out. “Cityside, yeah. I’m thinking .30 cal. Maybe three-oh-eight.”

I swiveled to scan the low-rise buildings of downtown Pismo—the seafood cafes, souvenir shops, and beach rentals. Clumps of tourists meandering down narrow Pomeroy Avenue stopped. Some gazed skyward, herd-like, examining the highest roofline—the old Hotel Pier Vista. Others rushed indoors.

When a second blast didn’t happen soon after, I saw pedestrians raise their palms in the classic “what’s up” shrug before continuing their weekend saunter. Some, trailing well-groomed dogs on leashes, took refuge in their smartphones.

I turned to face the Pacific as Bri sat in her folding chair. Coach Gev got out his binocs and we rejoined the hundreds of other parents, friends, and supporters along the beach to watch the tournament.

Three junior surfers, ages eleven to twelve—”grommets” in surf jargon—were perched on their boards 100 yards offshore in the chilly morning waters north of Pismo Pier. The contestants wore different colored jerseys over their wetsuits. Red jersey had priority takeoff; the next wave was his. As the kids waited for the sets to roll in, they bobbed in the mushy surf like sitting ducks.

“Yellow’s down!” Coach Gev shouted. He handed me his binoculars. “The kid’s slumped sideways off his board.”

“Cramp, maybe?” I pressed the field glasses to the bridge of my nose, fiddling with the adjustments. “January water temps are cold, fifty-three, fifty-four degrees. These temps? He should have worn a 5/4/3 mm instead. Maybe even a—”

There was a second sonic crack. I watched Yellow’s board splinter into pieces. Chunks of the foam core ringed the downed contestant as he struggled to keep his head above water.

Red jersey, closest to Yellow, dropped prone and paddled with fury toward him. Just as he was about to grab Yellow’s arm, I heard shot three. There was a splash near the tail of Red’s board.

Red turned turtle, flipping his tri-fin surfboard over so the bottom faced the sky. Only his hands, gripping the sides of the shortboard, were exposed.

Shot four took out Red’s middle fin. Shots five and six took out the two outer fins. Red let go of his board and sank out of view.

That left the eleven-year-old in the light blue jersey as the only contender sitting on the water. My son, Zael, was in full competition mode, hyper-focused on The One Thing—a wave with his name on it. A wave built by the sea gods just for him, for his performance, his tricks, the ones he’d stick. The 10-rating he’d be awarded by all three judges. That perfect ten.

Zael was in the zone, tunnel vision his ally. Chaos bending to will. He had no clue what had happened to Red and Yellow.

I popped out of my beach chair, sprinted from our shade canopy to the shoreline, and screamed as I waded in. “Duck and cover, Zael! Get down! Now!” I waved my arms, zigzagging through the shallows.

My son wasn’t hearing me, wasn’t seeing me, wasn’t even attuned to my panic despite his gift for sensing things unspoken. Zael paddled hard for takeoff, slid into the three-foot wave breaking off the pier, and dropped into the curl. He drove down the line, pumping his board to build speed, then bottom turned, and angled toward the lip to launch into his signature 360-degree air rotation and—

Blam.

Shot seven.

Zael’s right leg buckled. He lost balance and angled into a dive as far away from his board as his leash would let him. When he didn’t come up for air...

What Critics Are Saying!

“Engaging characters, wit, and suspense elevate this rip-curling page-turner.”
— Kirkus Reviews

“Pismo Beach Sniper is a tense and fast-moving mystery with real emotional stakes. The target audience is readers who enjoy mystery, private investigator fiction, crime thrillers, action suspense, coastal noir, and family-driven detective series. Readers who like Robert Crais’s Elvis Cole and Joe Pike novels may appreciate the same mix of banter, loyalty, and wounded-hearted heroism, though Jones swaps Los Angeles grit for Central Coast surf and spiritual undertow.”
— Literary Titan

“It felt like I was reading something akin to James Patterson: fast, frighteningly imaginative, and furious with action. Pismo Beach Sniper is a deftly plotted story of a man doing everything to keep his child safe in a world where not only waves can kill.”
—R. Oserio, Readers’ Favorite Reviews

BLURB:

When sniper fire erupts at the Central Coast Surf Trials at Pismo Beach, private investigator Thad Hanlon is thrust into every parent’s worst nightmare. His eleven-year-old son and two teammates are shot while surfing—one critically injured—plunging the contest into chaos and terrorizing the tight-knit Five Cities beach community.

The shooter disappears, torching his hideout, leaving only questions in his wake. Random attack—or the first move in a deadly game? Why target young surfers? And is the marksman finished…or just getting started?

Urged by desperate parents, Hanlon and his sharp-witted partner, Bri de la Guerra, race to protect the kids as they train for the upcoming West Coast Championships. But as the detective duo close in on the sniper, they uncover a chilling truth: the surf team isn’t his ultimate target—and the nightmare is far from over.

This gripping thriller will keep you turning pages late into the night.

Oceano Beach Bedlam
A Thad Hanlon/ Bri de la Guerra Mystery Book 2

What Critics Are Saying!

“A crunchy detective novel set in the world of California surfers. Jones delivers a proper beach read, both in form and content.”
-Kirkus Reviews

“Honestly, I had a blast with this one. Oceano Beach Bedlam is a smart and entertaining read. If you like your mysteries with surfboards, sass, and just enough heart to keep you caring, this one’s for you. It’s a great pick for fans of offbeat detectives, fast dialogue, and sun-drenched noir with a brain and a soul. I’d recommend it to readers who enjoy Janet Evanovich, Robert Crais, or the beachier edges of Elmore Leonard.”
— Literary Titan

BLURB:

In this second book in the surfing crime-fighter mystery series, Thad Hanlon and his martial-arts-obsessed partner, Bri de la Guerra, hang out their shingle as newly licensed private investigators. All That Glisters
A Thad Hanlon/ Bri de la Guerra Mystery Book 1

What Critics Are Saying!

“Jones’ action-packed murder mystery...is tension-fueled with plenty of twists and two appealing sleuths. In this detective series opener, Thad Hanlon, a 27-year-old forensic accountant, becomes the target of a murderous cadre when he accepts a new assignment that takes him from Los Angeles to the East Coast center of power. Woven into the gripping plot are sensual, detailed descriptions of Thad’s adventures riding the waves, which should please the surfer crowd and afford others a visceral sense of the experience.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“All That Glisters by Topper Jones is well-written with not a single dull moment. I liked the way the author included elements of action, mystery, and even some cyber investigating. Overall, I found this book to be an amazing read.”
—Sefina Hawke, Readers’ Favorite Reviews

“Hey!” Frank shouted the word as he landed with a thump on the deck right in front of me.

“Ack!” I jumped and grabbed the pillow beside me for protection. I nearly fell off the porch swing. “Don’t do that!”

Frank snickered. His tail flicked back and forth and his ears twitched.

“You startled me!”

“Really? It was so hard to tell.” He snorted with laughter.

I peeked from behind the pillow and shook a finger at him. “Bad cat!”

That just made him laugh harder. He rolled over on his back and waved his paws in the air.

He looked so silly that I relaxed and began to laugh, too.

“Good morning to you,” I said, as I smoothed out the pillow that had been my so-called protection.

Frank finally caught his breath and sat up. “What’cha doing out here all alone, Paige-o-roonie?”

“I was having a quiet, reflective morning. Did you catch the definitive word there? I ‘was’ having a quiet morning.”

“Are you implying that I interrupted you?”

“Not implying. Stating a fact.”

“For good reason.” He chuckled. “I see you have some coffee there.” He pointed his nose at my cup. “Want to go get this kitty a bowlful?” He crossed his front feet, tipped his head to the side and widened his eyes. Then to up his cuteness quotient, he batted his lashes. “Please?”

“Oh, for Pete’s sake,” I laughed, getting up from the swing. “I’ll be right back.”

I went into the kitchen to exchange my coffee for a cup of tea. Frank had jump started my heart, so I didn’t need any more caffeine. I fixed Frank a bowl of his favorite morning beverage: half-coffee, half-creamer. Any normal cat would be sick from the brew, but our magical library cat was not anything resembling normal.

The house was quiet as I grabbed our drinks and returned to the porch. I set Frank’s bowl on the table and sat on the swing. I took a big sip from my cup.

Frank took a leap over to the table and inhaled the aroma wafting from his bowl. He slurped greedily then gave a moan of delight. He tipped his head at me. “What were these reflective thoughts that I interrupted?”

I tapped a finger to my lips in thought, and glanced at my book, which lay quietly on the table beside me. For once, I didn’t have my nose in a cozy mystery. Instead, I had been rocking back and forth on the porch swing, enjoying the sounds of the birds and the quiet whisper of the wind through the trees as I had let my mind wander, until Frank had disrupted me.

“I’d been cycling through many topics, one after the other.”

“Maybe you were clearing your mind’s way for the upcoming new book adventure?”

“That’s probably true. Once we get inside a book, I won’t have time to ponder anything but the mystery we need to solve.”

Chapter 1. The Mysterious Coachman

The church hall of St Martin the Ragged, Scamperdour Street, Thameswake, London
A Sunday afternoon in March, 188-

We would be failing in our duty to our readers if we did not report that the notorious spirit-monger Mrs Ashton has returned to London. Whether in a slum church in the docks, or in the parlours of the prosperous, this sham is up to her old games. We do not deny that some who profess Spiritualism are wholly sincere, nor could we ever criticise those who seek solace for their deepest grief. What we can say is that Honoria Ashton carries with her a malodorous history – of midnight flits and unpaid bills, of greasepaint and mummery, of disappointment and dishonesty. Does this music-hall trickster truly raise the dead? We say only that if you invite her to dinner, count your spoons.

The Orb

A church hall of dark wood and brass, gaslight struggling to cheer it. Mrs Ashton jabbed the smoking coals of the stove with the poker, coughing, trying to goad it to warmth. Soon her poor flock would come to hear the voices of the dead and as their shepherd, she ought to prepare.

Damn that editor – that jackal, Philistine, scourge. Damn the trouble he would make for her. Damn his innuendo and lies. When had she last stolen a spoon?

Oh, the mayor of Calais’s silver ladle. That didn’t count, that was retribution not theft.

Twenty-five minutes to the hour, a drab London sky through high windows.

‘Tha bacon’s shoddy stuff,’ Mrs Bradshaw said. A foot taller than her hinny, and scowling, Braddie set the table with plates of sandwiches under rough cloth, simple fare for the people of the docks. ‘If you don’t pay a man, don’t expect his best.’

Rain drummed on the roof and Braddie’s foul mood filled the room like a storm off a northern hill.

They had quarrelled at breakfast, when Braddie had hunted and found the hidden bills: a delightful new Japanese table, and a tasteful landscape Mrs Ashton had picked up for a song. Braddie spun a nightmare prophesy of bailiffs and moneylenders and Queer Street. The Scottish creditors finding her. Mrs Ashton believed that if you ignored the accounts, they lost their power over you. Something usually turned up.

She was six months returned to London and still her weekday respectable meeting – her income – struggled to grow. These Sunday meetings were for common folk. Men and women, dockers and sailors and workers in factories and laundries, some without honest work at all – she gave them hope. So many struggled even to cling to their own rung of the Great Ladder of Society.

Braddie winced; her back must be bad. Two vast teapots waited for the kettle.

Oh, dear one. Dear Braddie, stern disapproval the natural set of her well-worn face. Once, Braddie had taken her walking in her birthlands – the North Country– and Mrs Ashton had seen on that bleak moor a lone crag of grey rock, standing fiercely alone. Just like Braddie, true, solid, and uncompromising. She even dressed like a moor side, in dour greens and browns and greys.

Braddie was her right hand, the floor beneath her feet, the glowing stove in her home, the only one to whom all her secrets were open. Eight years her ‘dear heart’.

Mrs Ashton walked over, looked to check they were alone, and craned up to kiss her – as a lonely lass greets her returning sailor, or the sailor the lass.

A flicker of a shy, warm smile and ‘Well, Honeybee,’ Braddie said. ‘Tha tea won’t mash itsel’.’

Mrs Ashton checked herself in a hand mirror. Dressing well was part of the magic. She flouted convention here by wearing no hat, no gloves. Artifice hid the march of time, the grey hairs and wrinkles. Her dress was the latest style. She did not mourn the passing of the crinoline, although the tight front and the extravagant skirting and bustle behind was almost as impractical.

A thump at the door. Mrs Ashton called, ‘Come, come, all are welcome.’

Anyone might come to hear Mrs Ashton bring the voices of the dead. The grieving, the curious, the spectacle-seekers. Mockers, roughs, a swell slumming it or a journalist. Some objected to her message, some that a woman dared to preach anything. But Mrs Ashton had lived on her wits for a long time and, in any case, men of sturdy build and fierce expression drank nearby, at her expense and alert to her metal whistle. Braddie had strong arms, a mighty stick with a metal core, and the courage to use them.

A tall stranger in a dripping cap and cloak entered. The fastenings gleamed with silver, an embroidery she could not make out. A coachman, perhaps, from a wealthy house or an extravagant one. Servants of the wealthy were always warmly welcome at her gatherings for what they knew: the words they could drop and the doors they could open.

‘Welcome, friend,’ she said, and he touched his cap.

‘Mrs Ashton? I have a message from her ladyship, ma’am, and I am to wait for your answer.’ A country burr, and silver whiskers.

How exciting. A Lady!

Stephen Cox is a writer living in London. He’d read every Holmes, Christie, and Sayers before he was 21 and did Holmes fanfic in school. He has also read the Moonstone six times. With a science degree he has always been a fan of history and the imagination.

The Crooked Medium’s Guide to Murder contains the strong characterisation, women protagonists, authentic period setting, and wide roaming imagination of his other works.

He says ‘It’s a rip-roaring twisty story, with relationships under stress and surprising readers at every turn.”

His first two novels, Our Child of the Stars and Our Child of Two Worlds were called “heartfelt, imaginative and gripping”, with wide praise in the national press.

Stephen says ‘I wanted female rogues as my leads – people who lead a crooked life, who need to keep secrets, yet can be kind and generous too. This is a rigorous detective story with a client in trouble and old crimes to be solved. It has everything – a brutal man, a Lady in danger, and the past and present feeding the action. Can these outsiders possibly win? Queer women certainly existed and made lives together in Victorian England, as those with eyes to see can see,’
