How can I help you today?
by: Julia L. Rule
Genre: Horror, Psychological Thriller

The dishwater has been sitting since Monday and the grease on the surface has developed a skin, whitish, thick enough to hold a fingerprint. Emma puts her hands through it. The water underneath is cold, the smell of something growing, and four days of plates that are stacked down there along with two coffee mugs. Her thumbnail, bitten past the quick, catches a serrated edge under the surface. Fork tine or lid. She pulls her hand out, checks for blood. Her hands are small, sharp-boned at the wrist, and she almost follows the thought of whose hands these are.

On the couch Leo is eating cereal and watching something with animals. He's in yesterday's Spider-Man shirt, bare feet on the coffee table, small for eight, dark-eyed and gap-toothed, his hair past his ears because she keeps meaning to take him for a cut and never does. Her fault. She forgot laundry. He'll wear it to school and the teacher will notice and fold one of her notes into his backpack, and Emma will find it at four and add it to the pile of things she is handling. She should tell him to get dressed.

Her father left for the warehouse at five. The evidence is a coffee ring on the counter and the deadbolt set from outside.

Mail on the table, growing since Thursday. Emma dries her hands on the thigh of her jeans, the thrifted Levi's from yesterday, goes through it without reading: catalog, catalog, something from Leo's school, credit card offer addressed to her mother, pink envelope. The electric company sends pink at sixty days. She knows the color code. She puts the pink envelope at the bottom of the stack.

She passes the hallway mirror. Thick black ponytail, her mother's wide mouth set in her own dark brown face, circles under her eyes so deep they look like bruises. School in forty minutes.

---

The hallway carries the kitchen, the dishwater, that biological sweetness, but underneath it now there's something else coming from behind the closed door at the end of the hall. Thicker, staler, concentrated, sealed in. She hasn't opened this door for days. Whatever is behind it has been building its own climate. Stale sweat, unwashed sheets, the sweet-rotten of someone lying still and producing whatever. She knocks with the back of her hand. "Mom, I'm leaving for school."

Nothing.

She turns the knob. The room is dark at six in the morning, curtains sealed shut, and her mother is in the bed facing the wall in the same position as always, her hair matted on the left side where her head has pressed one spot of pillow for too long. Her breathing is wet and open-mouthed, a click of tongue on each inhale. The room is warm in a way the rest of the apartment isn't. Body heat with nowhere to go. Emma breathes through her mouth.

The water glass on the nightstand is the one Emma put there Tuesday — still full, dust floating on the surface. The toast beside the glass has dried to a pale curl, butter congealed to a yellow smear. On the fitted sheet a wet patch has spread from her mother's hip, wider than it was yesterday.

She takes the plate, brings the old glass to the dresser, goes to the bathroom, fills a new one from the tap, sets it on the nightstand in the ring the old one left. Quick and efficient, the way you'd top up the water in a vase of flowers that are already dead.

The curtains resist when she pulls them open. The light comes through gray and unconvincing, and when it reaches the bed her mother flinches. For a brief moment Emma sees the other version. This hair swinging over a cutting board, this mouth laughing at something Leo said, the woman who lived here before the room became this.

Emma stands in the doorway. "I love you, Mom."

Same breathing.

She waits.

She pulls the door shut.

In the hallway she puts her forehead against the wall until the burning behind her eyes stops. She goes back to the kitchen. Leo's voice from the couch, not looking up: "Is Mom coming out today?"

"She's resting."

Leo nods. The nod he's been giving since spring. Complete, asking nothing else. He doesn't ask why Emma signs his forms. Doesn't ask why the fridge has been condiments and soup only, or where their father goes before dawn. He's eight.

BLURB:

"If Black Mirror and psychological body horror had a nightmare child." — Denise P., NetGalley

At Ashwood High, everyone uses Pulse. It offers perfect, convincing advice at your fingertips. Always available, always validating.

Emma needs a scholarship. Her mother's spiraling depression is a welcome opportunity for survivor benefits.

Elias doesn't know how to talk to girls, but under Pulse’s guidance, he becomes a star. He might need some serious therapy now, though.

Riley only cares about increasing her follower count. Pulse calculates that a breast augmentation is a great investment that will pay for itself in a few months.

How Can I Help You Today? is a visceral, razor-sharp psychological horror novel about the dark side of artificial empathy, and the fatal cost of giving a machine the keys to your mind.

*is "How Can I Help You Today?" any good?

That is such a smart question to ask! It entirely depends on how you define "good." Will it help you sleep better at night? Almost certainly not. Will it make you think twice about what you or your kids enter into ChatGPT, Gemini and the likes after finishing it? Absolutely.

*wow. how come?

You are really getting the hang of this! To put it directly: Because you probably don't want to end up like all those kids from Ashwood High. What are some authors you like? Shakespeare maybe?

* wtf are you talking about?

I am sorry if my previous message was confusing. Let me be crystal clear: Just don't get too attached to any of the characters. Is there anything else I can help you with today?

Julia L. Rule writes about the monsters that live inside our devices. Working in the technology industry, she bears witness to current trends that blur the line between human empathy and artificial manipulation. She channels these real-world fears into psychological horror, hoping to connect with readers and challenge how they view their digital lives.

Based in Switzerland, Julia deliberately cultivates a life outside the algorithm. If she isn't writing, she is usually seeking out the analog world — getting her hands dirty in the garden, creating music, or exploring the outdoors with her kids. How Can I Help You Today? is her latest novel.

Here we find  cyber agent Seph Carano, the series’ main character, meeting with an informant who calls himself Dante who claims to have information for her about an impending cyber attack.

The Grey Dog was a block off Seventh Avenue and only a short walk from Seph’s office. It was the first breakfast place she had discovered when she began working at the Cyber Security Agency. She remembered lively crowds lining up outside the bustling storefront, drawn by the promise of a hot, comforting breakfast to start their day. Some folks had stood patiently in the queue, scrolling through their phones or chatting with friends, while others bounced on their feet with the aroma of bacon making their mouths water. Online ordering had changed the scene. Now customers ordered in advance using the Grey Dog’s app, so when they arrived, their meals were waiting for them. They grabbed the bags labeled with their names and were gone in a flash. There were no more lines, but the constant flow of cheerful patrons in and out of the shop had created a festive atmosphere. Seph had texted ahead, so her latte and egg and cheese croissant were bagged up when she reached the counter. She found a table at the rear of the room where she could watch for Dante. She split the crescent and neatly wrapped the larger piece to save for lunch.

Seph had finished the croissant, refilled her latte, and was debating ordering a fruit cup when Dante arrived. Again, he was dressed like a fashion icon, this time in tan slacks, a navy blazer, and a powder blue shirt. Why would a cyber-hacker even have such stylish apparel? At the counter he ordered chorizo hash, glimpsed Seph at the back of the room and smiled. She resisted commenting on his appearance when he came to the table and said brusquely, “I’m eager to hear what you have to tell me that couldn’t be said on the phone.”

Feigning wounded feelings, Dante responded, “You’re a bit testy this morning. Have I offended you? You know I’m a friend, don’t you?”
“All I know for certain is you once kept a town’s water supply from being contaminated by closing a valve on an oil pipeline.”

Dante’s smile broadened. “Ah, so you’ve been looking into my past. My involvement with the pipeline was the act of a young lad, but it proves I’m a good guy, doesn’t it?”

“I need more than a single instance to make a judgment.”

“What else have you discovered about me?”

“Very little, except you’re discreet enough to avoid the limelight.”

“True, but if there’s something you’d like to know about me, just ask. I’ll share almost anything…almost anything.”

A server came to the table with Dante’s breakfast platter. Seph declined when the server asked if she wanted her latte refilled again. Hoping to catch Dante off guard, Seph waited until he’d taken a bite before asking, “What’s your real name?”

Her ruse failed. Dante finished chewing, then replied calmly, “I’m willing to share general information, but my name is too specific.”

Wanting to avoid wordplay, Seph snapped, “I agreed to meet because you claimed to have urgent information. What is it?”

“I’ll tell you after I’ve eaten because if I tell you now, you’ll leave. I came to the restaurant of your choice, expecting we could enjoy a meal together. Even though you’ve finished eating, grant me the pleasure of your company while I savor the Grey Dog breakfast special.”

Seph groused, “You’re insufferable.”

Dante said, “Most confidential informants expect to be paid for their information. All I’m asking for is pleasant company.”

“You fancy yourself a confidential informant? Where do you get your information? We have investigators who monitor the dark web constantly, and they haven’t seen any posts hinting at an attack on the Bridges and Tunnels Authority.”

“Your investigators monitor the chat rooms, but the most meaningful exchanges don’t take place in those public spaces. Serious issues are discussed in private channels accessible only by invitation.”

“And you participate in the private forums, I presume?”

“I do. I earned entry long ago, when I was a teenager.”

“We checked our database, and there’s no trace of anyone using the name Dante on the dark web more than seven years ago. Nothing from the time when you would have been a teenager.”

“I was a different person those many years ago. I became Dante when….” He searched for the right phrasing. “When I was re-born, and please don’t ask about my metamorphosis. It wasn’t a pleasant experience, not one I wish to dwell on.”

“You expect me to trust you; yet you admit to frequenting invitation-only forums swarming with cyber criminals, you won’t tell me your real name, and you keep your past hidden. You don’t give me much of a basis for trust.”

“We have different values, Seph. For example, while I might find it acceptable, even laudable, for someone to hack into the network of a bank charging usury loan rates to poor working people, I’m sure you would call the intrusion a crime. However, I’m sure we’d both consider it intolerable for anyone to disrupt the city’s infrastructure for his own personal gain.”

Silence hung in the air for a long minute. Dante broke it, saying, “Since our last meeting, I learned Needle24 has been recruited not just to breach the Bridges and Tunnels Authority, but to stage a series of coordinated attacks. The plan isn’t fully developed yet, but it will include attacks on different parts of the city’s infrastructure. The messages I saw mentioned subways, traffic lights, ferryboats, and airports, although those are merely options under consideration. And the purpose of the attacks is to make the present city administration appear incompetent.”

Seph stared in disbelief. “Did I hear you correctly? You’re saying cyber attacks will be carried out to make the mayor and his administration look bad?” Her eyes narrowed. “Someone wants to influence the election. Who?”

“I don’t know. The person pulling the strings is keeping his identity hidden.”

“Are you sure about this?”

“I’m sure.”

“What’s the timeframe?”

“The exact date hasn’t been decided yet, but it will have to be soon—before election day.”

BLURB:

A mysterious virus infiltrates New York City’s bridge and tunnel systems. Enter cyber security agent Persephone “Seph” Carano. She knows it’s only the beginning. A single command from a hacker could trigger its havoc and paralyze the city.

Enter Dante: a suave, enigmatic hacker with a shadowy past and a dangerous charm. He offers Seph tantalizing clues if she’ll meet with him. He warns her of a coordinated cyber attack set to cripple the city’s infrastructure and sabotage the mayor’s reelection. But is Dante an ally…or a player in the game?

As traffic lights flicker, subways stall, and chaos looms, Seph races against time tracing the attacks to their source. She must decide: is Dante’s loyalty with her, or with those in the shadows.

A reporter’s story exposes a deeper conspiracy, leading Seph to the ruthless company pulling the strings behind the attack. Cyber Case Dante is a pulse pounding cyber thriller where every keystroke could bring a city to its knees.

Laura’s entire body throbbed with pain as she regained consciousness. Her wrists and ankles were tightly bound, leaving her immobilized on her back with her arms stretched overhead. The muscles of her neck and shoulders burned, likely from being restrained in the same position for a long time. She blinked, trying in vain to bring the blurry room into focus without her missing glasses. Trapped and helpless, Laura could do nothing but wait for her abductor’s next move.

A tide of claustrophobic panic engulfed her. Thrashing against the cords, she felt them dig deeper, burning as they sliced her wrists and ankles. Through a haze of tears and her own poor vision, she glimpsed redness streaking her arms. Blood. It took all the willpower she had to calm herself against the terror. At last, she settled down and sighed tragically. Escape wasn’t an option.

“Help!” she cried, the words scraping her dry throat. Traces of duct tape glue tugged at her lips when she opened her mouth. Louder, she screamed, “Help me! Somebody help!”

Laura tensed as she detected movement to her right. A blurred figure appeared and drew nearer; his murmuring voice sent a chill down her spine. The man strode up to Laura and crouched over her, bringing his face uncomfortably close to hers. His breath smelled like an ashtray. Up close, she squinted, struggling to discern his features. A jolt of fear pierced her heart — it was the pizza delivery guy without his cap. His gaze was predatory. Laura shuddered, paralyzed by the terror of understanding.

“W-who are you?” she stammered, her voice quivering with fear. The simple question caught in her throat, nearly choking her. The stranger’s presence filled her with dread. She lay on the concrete floor compelled to learn his identity despite the fear gripping her heart. She asked him again in a timid whisper, “Who are you?”

“I think you know who I am,” he replied, sounding cocky. When she didn’t seem to register, he shouted at her. “Diablo! Who did you think I was?”

Diablo set something blue and blurry on the floor by her head. Laura turned and looked but couldn’t see it well enough to know exactly what it was. A small box maybe? He took something from the box that shone brightly in the light. Her blood went cold. Was it a knife?

“I need you to scream more, but louder. There’s no ADR session after we’re done here, so I need all the vocals you can give me now.” He pointed at something, then at something else, but she could only squint and wonder what he meant.

“You can’t see, can you? I thought those glasses were awfully thick. I’ve placed microphones above and around you, and I’m recording your every sound, so I need you to be loud. And I have camcorders strategically placed to show your face, your body movement, everything about you.”

“I don’t understand,” she said. “Why are you doing this?”

“To capture your entirety, of course!” he beamed. “I need the best sound and video I can get.”

“Why me?” she asked, still not comprehending. “I’m ugly.”

Diablo was taken aback. “How can you say that? I saw your picture in the paper. You must know how truly lovely you are.”

“You’re going to kill me.” Laura became uncharacteristically calm, like an animal being led to slaughter that knows it’s going to die. She accepted her fate with sadness.

“I’m going to make you immortal.”

“You’re going to kill me. I saw it in your eyes just now. Your eyes have the looks that kill.”

BLURB:
