Hello From My Corner of the Woods!

If you're new here, welcome! I'm so glad you stopped by.

If you've been following my writing journey for a while, thank you for coming along on this adventure with me. Whether you've been here since the beginning or you've only recently discovered my books, I hope you'll find something here that sparks your imagination.

I've always loved stories that blend mystery, folklore, fantasy, and just a touch of darkness. Those are the stories I love to read, and they're the stories I love to write.

Some of you may already know my paranormal mystery, Shadows of Willow's Creek, where long-buried secrets and ancient evil collide in a small town. Others may have discovered Selkie's Storm, a novella inspired by Celtic folklore and one of my favorite mythical creatures.

Those stories will always have a special place in my heart.

But over the past several years, I've been pouring my heart into something even bigger.

A new world.

A world hidden beneath the roots of an ancient Hawthorn tree.

A place where lanterns glow through the night, kingdoms rise and fall, old magic lingers in forgotten forests, and legends are still being written.

That world is The Fae Chronicles.

The first novel, Battle for the Underworld, has been two years in the making. Every map, every kingdom, every character, every piece of history has been carefully woven together to create a world I hope readers will want to visit again and again. Fun fact – it has already been published once before. However, the story was very important to me and I knew I had rushed it. To be honest, I had a lot of heavy things going on, and I still do. But I've learned to compartmentalize some of these things, putting them away for later so I can handle them more readily with a fresh mind.

I'm getting closer than ever to sharing it with you.

As I prepare for its release, in about two weeks I think,

I thought it would be fun to invite you behind the scenes.

In the coming weeks, I'll be sharing glimpses of the Underworld here on the blog. You'll meet fascinating creatures, discover forgotten legends, explore magical kingdoms, and uncover little pieces of history that don't always make it into the books. Some posts may introduce you to characters. Others may explore Celtic folklore, the myths that inspired parts of my world, or simply offer a peek into my writing process.

Think of this as an invitation.

An invitation to walk beneath the Hawthorn.

To wander hidden paths.

To discover stories waiting just beyond the lantern light.

I'm so excited to share this journey with you.

Thank you for being here.

The adventure is only just beginning.

Until next time,

Joli G. Campbell

Sorrowful Tidings and Loss All Around

Hello friends.

I know that I have been out of pocket of late. I apologize. Normally I’d be talking about holiday plans, writing and character ideas and other fun things, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t feeling a bit too down of late to think about the cheerful things. But that is what we should do when we’re feeling depressed, right? Of late, however, I have been finding that very difficult. To put it bluntly, the world has gone mad. Globally, nationally, and personally.

And I feel like my little writer family is under attack by some unseen hand. A few months ago, a person I’ve worked with directly lost her daughter. A couple of week’s ago, another fellow author, who also is my mentor, my editor, and even plays the role of my assistant, nearly lost her husband in a terrible accident where he had been hit by an 18 wheeler, and remains in a coma, and he is currently still struggling in the hospital as I type this. And most recently, my longtime best friend and writing partner, Jenna Morrison, passed away from a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. The latter two are currently in need of financial help at the moment. Katie is trying to raise money so that she can be there for her husband during his recovery, help with medical bills, household bills, and food for her and the children. Jenna needs help with her cremation expenses, and to help her mother, who was already struggling, so that she can take the time she needs to mourn her terrible loss. I will include the ways to help both families at the end of my post, if anyone is interested. I know any amount, no matter how small, would be appreciated.

Now, most of you who have followed me have some inkling about my long relationship with Jenna. We have been best friends for 24 years, and she had me write with her after she was first diagnosed with cancer, I believe in 2021. She and I had both always wanted to be writers, and it was part of her bucket list. There was a brief time we thought she wouldn’t make it, and she wanted me there to ensure that her books were completed so that they could be published if she did not happen. Together we came up with the pen name “Kenna Campbell” after a silly skit we had made up many years prior, where we called ourselves, “Super Kenna” which combined both of our first names, and we were the most ridiculous “super heroes” you could imagine. Campbell, while my current last name, had been hers for a while so we went with it. Together, we were part of several anthologies. Our first was “Pounding Bass” we also wrote, “The Book Keeper” which was part of a Jane Austin tribute that raised money for breast cancer research, called “Austin Tea Party”, both which were on the best-selling list, which was a major source of pride and excitement for her, and rightfully so. I also assisted her in writing quite a few other books, such as “The Neverlander” from there “Grim’s Promise” and a story from there “Hexes and Ohs” anthology, as well as a book called “Skin” which was a horror novella. There were others, including her final book that is coming out in there “Ties of Friendship” anthology, called “The Return” as well as the plans for several other book ideas that we have hashed out, one in particular that I have promised her I would get written at some point, and I absolutely intend to do that for her.

Jenna and I met through a local band called “Blue October”. They were big enough to sell out smaller venues, but small enough that the entire crowd became family, and the boys knew all our names. We had this bulletin board we all communicated through, planning meet-ups prior to shows, sharing poetry and artwork, our lives, everything. She had seen me on there, and I had seen her, but we never spoke. One day, I was at a show with my ex, and a girl that I am not fond of, who I’ll just call C, approached me, with Jenna standing shyly behind her in tow. I was very confused as this girl, who again, I very much disliked, introduced me to Jenna. C told me she had wanted to meet me, and, I eyed Jenna with skepticism, curious why she’d want to meet me and what C had told her about me, and I just said, “Hi.” awkwardly and went on with the show. In retrospect, I hate I reacted that way to her. If anyone else had introduced us, I would have been much warmer and open towards her, but I wasn’t. I let my bias towards C get in the way with starting what would become one of the longest and most important friendships of my life much sooner.

Thankfully for me, it wasn’t too much longer before we became instant besties. She had expressed deep sadness on the Blue October board. She had just gone through something very heavy, which I won’t share here as it’s something she would have wanted to keep private, and she was just feeling very alone. I messaged her, asking if she needed someone to talk to, and gave her my number. She called me. We spoke for maybe 5 hours on the phone that evening, and the call went from her sobbing, to laughing and making plans with me for the weekend to go to another concert. We became best friends over that phone call.

At the time she was living with roommates, who were also part of the Blue family, Emma and Johnna, and we all became good friends. They were so much fun to be around. We always laughed and had a great time, no matter what we did. Sadly, they eventually had a falling out, but Jenna landed on her feet and got her own apartment.

We went to concerts together almost every weekend. Blue October, Canvas, Deep Ella, Spoonfed Tribe, Johnny Goudie, Ryan Holle and so many more local musicians, and we built bonds with so many of them, and their own followers. When we were gallivanting across Texas to see all our boys play, we would have sleepovers where we’d stay up late, watch movies and act like full-blown children.

Jenna was a lot of fun. She was whimsical and brought out that side in me as well, which was a big fat, as anyone who knows me knows I can be very reserved in new environments. But she forced me out of my comfort zone. I did things I would never have done on my own thanks to her. She used to say she was a bad influence on me, but I disagree. I think she was a dominant influence. She helped me really live.

She was there with me through lots of hard times, too. When my mother was taken from me unexpectedly at 49. She dropped everything to be there for me. When I went through divorce from my ex-husband, she was there for me. When we lost so many friends from our music circles, and we truly have lost so many, we leaned on one another. When I lost my dad, she couldn’t be with me in person, but she was with me, offering me comfort and support from afar.

And through the good times, encouraging me when I fell in love again. Encouraging me to follow me passion and write.

It wasn’t always great. Her medicines sometimes made her surly, and we had a falling out over it when I felt bombarded at a time that I was going through so many other painful things. We lost a year. To make it worse, that was when her cancer came back. Almost right after our falling out. I tried to reach out to her, but she shut me down. But I kept track of her journey through my husband, who she was still friends with. Eventually, she reached back out to me. Quickly rebuilding what we had lost, we wrote one more book together. I am angry with myself for not pushing through the pain when her meds became too much. I am angry at myself for not making that last call because I was sick, when she told me she missed me and wanted to talk. I pushed it back to that weekend, and by that Friday she had become mostly unresponsive. I was too late.

However, I had a dream awhile back and I feel like it was her way of saying goodbye to me. We were having a sleepover, like we used to... and she said, “Pray how you want to pray; it’s all heard the same way.” Before she laid down and just went to sleep. I feel like she was telling me something very important, a secret that she had been let in on before she was going to leave us. In fact, it’s been sitting with me so much that I plan to use it in my next story. I am making a character after her that is more closely based on who she is as a person than Roux was (Who was loosely based on Jenna.). I’m naming her Jinsok, and she will be a sort of religious leader in my story, which Jenna pursued religious education, and eventually became a Buddhist monk. She also studied psychology. Education and enlightenment were very important to her. So, I feel like this dream was a really profound message from her.

So, while I am heartbroken over the loss of my dear friend, I am eternally grateful that she had led such an interesting and full life in such a short amount of time. She was an enigma in the most magical way. So, thank you, Jenna. For everything. I’ll miss you always.

If you would like to donate to help Jenna move on to her next glorious adventure, you can do so through Kathy Shelton’s Venmo, which I’m including in this post. We decided not to use GoFundMe, as I was having difficulty setting it up, and her mom will need the help much faster than it would take to process it. If anyone would like to check in with Jenna’s mom before donating, you can find her as Marion Carnes Morrison on Facebook.

I’m also including a link to my sweet friend, Katie Jenkin’s, GoFundMe. If you would like to assist her and her family during this difficult time, while her husband heals. Any amount is appreciated, no matter how small. And if you cannot help financially, your love, prayers and thoughts, as well as sharing, are just as powerful.

Thursday Update with a Twist

Hello friends!

Yesterday I received several private queries on one of my social media sites. One asked about my writing style and how I come up with my ideas. I thought about how often I am asked that question and it’s not something I’ve written much about. I’ve dropped small hints. There is an interview that exists where I explain it a bit, but that went away once the server changed, I think haha. So, I thought that today, I’d talk a little about how I do what I do.

Let me know if you have any thoughts or ideas of your own. I love learning how others come up with their wonderful ideas, and find it fascinating how so many of our brains work so different from one another! And when I say this, I in no way think I’m the best writer. I think I do alright but I think I’m onto something here, at least for me, so here we go!

Everyday life can often fuel fantastical storytelling; even the most mundane thing can create a thread in your mind and leave you with a string of magical ideas, if you allow yourself to be open to it. One thing I often do with my family is come up with the entire life story of a random person we may see on our commute. They get entire names, family life, job descriptions, what they do for fun, and so on and so forth.

Or maybe you come across an old, discarded, filthy doll with one missing eye and only a few tufts of hair, and while thinking about what its history may have been, you can come up with an entire storyline. Something scary, perhaps? Or maybe something sad and heartfelt. Maybe you’ll end up writing the next “Velveteen Rabbit”? Side note; I think the Velveteen Rabbit is one of the most important children’s books in existence.

Or maybe it’s just a phrase. I remember one time I was talking with a musician friend of mine, who writes beautifully I might add, and I don’t remember what it is I said, but right after I spoke my small sentence, he spun it into a beautiful start to a song on the spot. He did nothing with it, but I was really taken aback at how quickly he did that. When I do it, It’s usually a conversation I have with myself in my head and when I can I try to rush to write it down before I forget it too, maybe, be used in a future story.

If you’re not careful, these fleeting moments, these snapshots in your mind, can vanish as quickly as they had appeared. So, if you’re an aspiring writer, or any type of artist, carry something around where you can record what you’ve seen immediately. Whether it’s a notepad, a recorder, perhaps just the camera on your cell phone.... but do it. Because for me, it is personally the best way to come up with ideas. After all, magic often hides itself in plain sight, just waiting to be discovered.

Checking Back In after a Break of Unexpected Events!

Hello everyone!

I apologize for my absence last week. My computer was out of commission while we were basically trying to reorganize our entire house. At this time we are a family of 9 in a four-bedroom home. A lot, right?! Absolutely. I can explain.

I have four adult children. We live in one of the most expensive and top-rated towns in the country. The way we can afford to do this is by splitting rent with my oldest son and his wife, and my youngest son, who is still in college, pays the electric bill. Without this setup, there is no way that we could afford to live here, and we still barely can. Especially with everything going up right now, I think we’re all feeling the pain in our wallets.

Both my son and daughter-in-law work from home. My son is currently helping build a 2D/3D gaming engine called Godot (If anyone is interested–it’s FREE! And people are loving it so far.) My daughter-in-law is an executive for a well-established advertising company. I write and take care of their little baby boy. My husband works in PC repair and, as previously mentioned, my youngest son is a student at SNHU studying software engineering and works at a fast-food restaurant to help pay the bills. Our house has 4 bedrooms and 2 baths, but it also has this lovely sunroom, which has been turned into my daughter-in-law’s office.

This past year, my youngest daughter and her 2 children came to stay with us because, to be blunt, she was in an abusive situation in another town about 4 hours away from home. My ex-husband, his girlfriend (Who I adore, btw) and I went up there about half a year ago and brought her here. It’s been a stressful situation on many fronts. And not because my daughter is doing anything wrong, or anyone else in our home for that matter, but it’s a combination of space and noise, as there is a little baby who needs a lot of sleep and a LOT of zoom meetings with clients and staff.

We created a makeshift bedroom in one corner of the living room for my oldest grand, who just turned 12. Weirdly, for the time being until I can get something else that works better, I turned a heavy table sideways, stapled some sheets to the table and a high part of the wall to make a high ceiling for him and surrounded it with small dressers to give him privacy. My youngest son has been moved from his room to the dining room, which we also closed off completely so that he, too, can have privacy. It isn’t perfect; we need to buy more soundproof curtains and stuff. And it’s not super beautiful, either lol. But we’re trying our best to make do in a tough situation.

My youngest daughter, however, is being hit left and right with stress. Her ex has been threatening her and hiding from the police, so that they can’t arrest him for DV or serve him with the restraining order or even custody orders. She’s struggling to find a job. She’s had a lot of great interviews that she was sure about, and even a job offer, but they are giving her the runaround about when she can start. On top of that, she is stressed about the noise from her little baby, almost two, who has the vocal range of Maria Callas (famous opera singer), which, causes additional stress, as our house needs to be quiet almost the entire day because of work and sleeping infants.

So, we’re trying to navigate that issue. We have noise-canceling curtains hanging everywhere that are graded for welding, yet my little angel girl’s voice pierces through it like a siren. So, if anyone has any ideas on what we can do about any of that, please reach out, because we are at our wits end. We’re a tight-knit family, and I want to keep it that way! HAHA.

My other daughter and her soon to be husband are doing fantastic, albeit quite tired, as the newest little sleeps all day and likes to stay up partying all night. Her big sister is taking the role seriously and is doing a beautiful job keeping Momma busy as she tries to share all of her food with the new baby! But we have wonderful news, my soon to be son-in-law graduated school and landed a nice AC job right out of the gate. So we’re very excited for him.

Anyway, so there is the tale of why I went MIA for a week. I’ll try to do better, and maybe next time talk about books, characters, authors, writing ideas, or whatever else.

Oh! Before I go, I DID briefly hear from Jenna(best friend and co-author, including for the latest anthology we have out for Ties of Friendship) over a week ago. She is doing all right so far. She’s starting a respite care program; she seemed quite hopeful about it. But she’s still fighting! We don’t call her Stonewall for nothing!

Anyway, I’d be remiss if I didn’t remind everyone that we still have 2 anthologies available to order. Both cost only 99 cents if you get a digital copy, so there’s that! You just cannot beat 5 authors for 99 cents.
