by: Keith Wood
Genre: Dark Historical Halloween Murder Fiction

Add to your TBR List!

BLURB:

'The Day of the Spider' is a sort of sequel to the debut novel, 'One Day in May' by the author, but can be equally read as a standalone work as it is very different, though still set in the 18th century.

The novel is primarily set in the heart of the Hambleton Hills of North Yorkshire, though it starts off in Mansfield in Nottinghamshire where the heroine (or should that be anti-heroine), Nellie Chapman, a sexually abused young woman from a traditional mining family feels she has to move a long way from her past life. She has no plans but to get away and live a life on her own terms, an uncommon practice for a woman in the 18th century.

Despite Nellie's unlawful past, fate ensures that she seems to bear a charmed life. You may hate her or love her; it's for you to judge and you'll find plenty to entertain as you sit in judgement.

Keith Wood

Keith Wood was born in Halifax, Yorkshire in 1947, his family moved to North Yorkshire in 1952 where he spent his early life. Leaving secondary school at 15 with no qualifications, he got a job as a garden lad at a large country house in the Hambleton Hills.

He eventually pursued a career in local government working up to a head of department after gaining a master’s degree in environmental management. He can therefore call upon his wide experiences working across many departments.

He admits he does very little planning and sees himself as a seat of the pants type of writer. He says his plots develop organically as he goes along. Much like the story of his life.

Although having a successful career he feels that at 78, he can't yet put his feet up, he has ambitions of writing many more works before curling his toes up.

BLURB:

All Horrors’ Eve is where the book girlies flock and masked men come out to play.

Lark is one of them, lurking in the shadows. Working as a scare actor means he doesn’t have to talk, which is fortunate because he has vocal cord paralysis. That doesn’t stop him from stalking and teasing the guests in silence. He’s never wanted more than the occasional hook up until the night he spots a beautiful woman with a scar across her throat. Even when he gets a taste, he craves more. But will Sutton accept him—voiceless and all?

Sutton didn’t anticipate meeting a horny man in a pumpkin mask at a Halloween theme park. Nor did she think she’d do the deliciously naughty things she’s done with him. In public no less. But now she’s hooked. She feels safe revealing all of herself to him—from the chaotic joker she portrays at her adult haunted house to the stories behind her scars. The only problem is Lark continues to hide. Will he ever let her see the man behind the mask?

Content Considerations: If not made obvious by the description above, Sexy Spooky Season is an erotic romance. The male main character wears a mask. The heat level is high and all the scenes are with the door wide open. Please check out the sample and the Content Warning page to see what you'll be in for.

Tropes & Other Info: Masked MMC, Halloween Theme Park, Speaking Disability, ASL, Service Dog, Chaotic Female Joker, Adult Haunted House, Scarred FMC, Self-Harm (past, mentioned), Scare Actors

The shovel scraped against a root, the sound amplified in the oppressive silence of the Vermont forest. Everet jumped, his heart hammering against his ribs. He glanced up at Blair, but she seemed unfazed, her features macabre behind the gleam of the flashlight. The light danced across the freshly turned earth, illuminating the ghastly task at hand.

Everet swallowed, the metallic tang of fear coating his tongue. “Do you think this is deep enough?” He hated the tremor in his voice. He hated everything about this.

Blair appraised the hole and gave a curt nod. “Deep enough to hide her.”

He wiped sweat from his forehead, the cool night air doing little to alleviate the clammy heat clinging to his skin. The forest felt alive, watching them with unseen eyes. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, sent shivers down his spine.

“I just... I keep thinking about her face,” he whispered. “Disfigured beyond recognition. Almost…obliterated.”

Blair huffed a sigh. “Snap out of it, Everet. We don't have time for your guilt trip. We made a mistake. We're fixing it. Now, let’s get her in the ground and be done with it.”

He knew she was right, logically. But logic had abandoned him the moment the sickening thud echoed through the quiet road, the moment he saw the young woman lying lifeless in front of the car.

He gripped the girl’s feet and Blair picked her up by the shoulders, and they eased her into the hole. He took some solace in the fact they’d placed her there gently rather than tossing her in like discarded trash. But then, that would be small comfort to the friends and family who would never know what happened to their loved one.

He began shoveling the loose dirt on top of her body, when a sound came to him. A low, keening moan that seemed to emanate from the very earth beneath his feet. He froze, his shovel clattering to the ground.

“What was that?” he stammered, his eyes wide with terror.

Blair paused, her head cocked. “Probably just an animal. Get back to work.”

But Everet couldn't move. The moan came again, closer this time, laced with an unearthly sorrow that resonated deep within his bones. He recalled what he’d read about Agatha. About how she’d vowed vengeance on evildoers. Well, weren’t him and Blair evildoers? It didn’t get much more evil than what they’d done.

“For God’s sake,” Blair bit out. She snatched the shovel from where it lay and finished covering the girl with dirt. When she was done, she looked at him, and a hint of sympathy shone in her eyes. “I’m sorry, Everet. I know I sound callous, but I don’t mean to be. It’s the only way I’m able to keep it together. Yes, what happened was tragic. But our going to jail, losing everything, hurting the people who love us would only compound the tragedy. Nothing can be done to bring the poor girl back. The best thing for everyone is just to move on and try to forget this ever happened.”

Everet nodded but didn’t reply. He knew damn well he could never forget this had happened. And if Blair had even an ounce of humanity in her, she wouldn’t be able to either.

BLURB:

A tragic accident…

A fateful decision…

A horrific weekend they won’t soon forget…

Everet Holcomb is cheating with his sister-in-law, Blair, and the two sneak off for an illicit out of town getaway. While driving down a dark country road, they hit something and are horrified to discover they've killed a young woman. Panicked, they bury the body instead of calling the police, knowing if their spouses learn of their affair, they’ll lose everything.

When Everet’s son brings his new girlfriend home for his college graduation celebration, they notice that something about her seems…off. The odor of dirt emanates from her, but Everet and Blair are the only ones who can smell it. And when Everet almost chokes to death for no apparent reason, they start to wonder…have their misdeeds come back to haunt them?

Alicia Dean

Author Alicia Dean hails from Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweeping down the plain, (sometimes gusting and twisting and ravaging down the plain...) She is from Moore, affectionately known as Tornado Alley, but now lives in Edmond.

She's always wanted to be a writer and wrote her first romance at the ripe old age of ten. She still has the tattered, pencil-written copy of 'Just Pretend,' titled after one of her favorite Elvis Presley songs and featuring a hero who looks JUST like Elvis. (Have you guessed, she's an Elvis fan?)

Other than reading and writing, her passions are Elvis Presley, MLB, NFL (she usually works in a mention of one or all three into her stories) and watching (or rewatching) her favorite televisions shows like Dexter, Vampire Diaries, Justified, and Breaking Bad. Some of her favorite authors are Michael Connelly, Dennis Lehane, Lee Child, Lisa Gardner, Ridley Pearson, and Jonathan Kellerman...to name a few.

Burn the Witch.

Allie and I were meant to have a future together—one built on love, not fear. But here in Hawthorne, shadows lengthen, and whispers drift through the woods like curses. So when Alondra falls mysteriously ill, I know exactly who’s behind it.

Desperation drags me into the darkest corners of my magic—places where I no longer fear the spells I once vowed never to cast. Even joining a coven of the wicked no longer feels like betrayal. The deeper I descend, the more I uncover about the witch who haunts me… and the shadow that may not belong to her alone.

Walpurgis Night approaches—the night witches burn. But what happens when it’s the warlock who strikes the match… willing to burn everything—my heart, my soul—to save the one I love?

BLURB:

Cursed the moment I fell in love with her.

While home in Raleigh for semester break, I didn’t expect my girlfriend, Alondra, to ask me for a favor: present my Book of Shadows to the leader of a satanic cult. She was looking for a new male witch for her coven. Of course, she knew it wouldn’t be me.

But when a curse took hold of our college campus—and the spirits I thought I’d left behind came back—I realized I couldn’t keep the book closed much longer.

Now something dark surrounds me. Is it the work of the wizard with the devilish goatee? Or is it a little girl possessed by something far worse?

I lit a dark shadow, and now I feel only confusion. Whatever this darkness is, it’s coming for Alondra, our family, and every witch in Hawthorne.

In a dark corner in the ugly three-story building we call the Taylor Library lies a secret enclave known only to me and a select few nerds matriculating through Hawthorne U. I’m sitting alone there in one of the brown leather recliners, with dim lights overhead, studying my textbook. That’s when I notice small pieces of white paper floating down like snow onto my page. Then comes more. I look up and my girlfriend is standing over me, holding two books under her arm and letting torn paper spill over my book. Her long black hair is fixed in a ponytail, and she’s wearing a black button-down with a checkered skirt and black leggings. She’s makeup-less. Even her lips are red. The getup would almost be preppy, if it weren’t so black.

I shouldn’t be that surprised to find her. See, she’s one of the nerds who knows about my secret spot. And she’s got a big irritating grimace.

I glower at her. I’m really pissed. She pouts.

Then I look back down at my book and ignore her. She grunts.

“Found you.”

I lift an eyebrow. I sigh, shake my head, and turn to the next page.

She walks over to the recliner across from me and tries to slide it over. This is really funny because the chair must weigh, like, a thousand pounds. She sighs and gives up. Then she comes back over and sits on the couch beside me, but a bit too far—which I like—and heaves a big sigh.

“Sorry, Liam,” she says. “Didn’t mean to disturb your studying.”

“I’m not mad about that.”

“Oh… good.” Then she irritatingly puts one of her books to the side on the couch and opens the other one. She scoots back, pulls out a highlighter from her purse, and starts studying, as if we planned to study here together all along.

I look at her, but she doesn’t look up from her book. She just says, “Hi.”

“What are you doing?”

“Studying,” she says with a shrug, staring at her textbook.

I get up.

She grunts again, thinking I’m leaving, I suppose.

“I’m mad that you two didn’t say a damn word about what happened last night the whole drive home,” I confess, falling back in my chair. “When I awoke in the morning, dazed like last time, Jane was back to being your best friend and yapping with you about clothes and the newest fucking movie that just hit theaters. Why? You never explained anything. It was like Hilltop Bluff. I woke up to you telling Alice that the ghost was gone and all was well.”

“It was.”

“Jane fell into my arms terrified as if needing protection,” I say, shaking my head. “Protection from you.”

“Maybe you dreamed that?” Alondra quips. She laughs at my expression. I don’t. She seems like she’s in a really good mood, which actually upsets me more. “Oh, come on, Lee, Jane and I have had our differences. We fight and we make up. We made up. It happens all the time. Now it’s over. I heard her argument and I agreed. I won’t do that to her again.”

“What did you do to her?”

“Well…” She stops because, right then, a student with glasses and a backpack walks down the steps.

 BLURB:

I fell in love with a goth, but she’s a witch.

Starting school at Hawthorne University was not going well, until I met my classmate Alondra. Allie was different. She was goth. But she was also mysterious, confident and fun. I was into that. My name’s Liam. My friends call me Lee.

Things got weird after I accompanied her to her haunts. Poltergeists and demons attacked little girls. I watched Alondra help exorcise these ghosts, but some of their evil stuck to me.

Well, being attracted to a witch was one thing; dating one was quite another. It seemed the closer I got to Allie, the more her witchcraft endangered my friends. And my soul. You decide. I chronicled everything here in her book.
